The Transcript For This Page
Panel 1
Half-page panel– Inside the boys' hab, which is fairly spacious. Ernie and the boys, now in 'shirt-sleeves', are gathered around a zero-gee food preparation area, which looks a little bit like a chemistry lab – several oblate spheroids varying in volume from one to four liters are attached to struts with 'gecko' pads. The spheroids are transparent on their upper halves (some are transparent all the way around), and have soft valves on two to four places in their top sides through which stirring spoons or spatulas can be inserted and manipulated. Some of the spheroids are held against electric heating elements, others (for non-heated food like salads) are simply held against the working surface. The upper and lower halves can be separated along a seam for adding ingredients or removing the prepared food. Several of the boys are at work here, stirring, adding ingredients, under Ernie's direction, as the other boys look on. Some fresh fruits and vegetables are held in a net anchored to the work surface, and we can see a few opened boxes. In the background, we can see several of the girls.
Caption: Break for lunch: While pre-cooked and packaged foods could have been used, Scouts were expected to cook their own food from basic ingredients.
Caption: There was even an Achievement Pin for 'space cooking.'
Caption: The first meal on Eight-Ball was the boys' responsibility – the girls would prepare dinner.
