The Transcript For This Page

Panel 1
Medium shot of Bert speaking on his comm to Tobi.
Tobi (filtered): Waitaminute. Wouldn't Nowra's calls be monitored?
Bert: Sure they were. But he figured a way around that.

Panel 2
Nowra standing in front of a desk, facing a grumpy-looking male bureaucrat. Nowra is gesturing with his arms, pleading his case.
Caption (Bert): 'They were told to speak in English, but Nowra got permission to speak to his grandmother in Bunuba, because that was supposedly the only language she spoke.
Caption: 'Not true, but the government bought it.'

Panel 3
Shot of a lumpish-looking female bureaucrat at a console, listening intently to something on a head-set while making notes on a paper notepad. She's looking unhappy. The grumpy male bureaucrat from the preceding panel is standing behind her, looking over her shoulder.
Caption (Bert): 'Their project lunguist had very little knowledge of the language.
Caption: 'Plus, Nowra and granny salted their calls with so many idioms, slang terms and family language, the listeners were totally lost.'

Panel 4
Closer-in shot of the female bureaucrat, still with the headset on, but her expression is one of defeat.
Caption (Bert): 'Not wanting to admit failure to her superiors, the linguist mostly pretended to listen after the first few calls.'
