The Transcript For This Page

PANEL ONE (upper left sixth of page)

Two-shot: dishelmeted Krumm and Holder, against a background of
mullioned windows and rigging. The Captain squints one eye and strokes
his beard.

Krumm: 'And these new outboard thrusters we were given?'

Holder: 'Supposedly fully functional, sir. The Ceo sent technicians
to man and maintenance the things. I had some trouble with 'em. Said
they were engineers, not called upon to work unless the thrusters were
needed.'

PANEL TWO (upper right sixth of page)

Krumm strikes an imperious pose. Holder is laughing.

Krumm: 'Want to deadhead it, do they?'

Holder: 'Aye, sir.'

----------------------------------------------------------------------

PANEL THREE (middle left sixth)

Krumm puts a hand on Holder's shoulder.

Krumm: 'Tell them they'll be fed only when the thrusters are in use.
When they stop whining, give them manual labor: emptying thundermugs,
refinishing decks ... '

PANEL FOUR (middle right sixth of page)

Closeup on Holder, laughing.

Holder (laughing): 'No need, sir! I put 'em off and promoted Tarrant's
friend Moonkatz to Chief Engineer -- new title for a new job. He was
an engineer, in the Coordinated Arm, before the Aggregate tried t'turn
him into an Oplyte.'

PANEL FIVE (lower left sixth of page)

We are suddenly aware of the once-human Moonkatz, standing up on
the control deck beside the traditional binnacle and a retrofitted
control console. He is an extremely tall individual, very husky. His
coloring is brownish. And he has four arms -- and a snakelike tail
instead of legs and feet. He waves down at Krumm and Holder witrh one
of his big-fingered hands.

Below, on the maindeck, in a corner of the panel, seen from the
back, are Krumm and Holder.

Moonkatz: 'Count on me, sir. These engines are simple, compared to
what I'm used to.'

PANEL SIX (lower right sixth of page)

On the command deck, uppermost of the decks above the cabins,
Krumm and Holder stand beside a carronade. It should look exactly like
a projectible, except that it's the size of a basketball, and mounted
to shoot under the taffrail.

Krumm: 'Triple up on these carronades. I see that we have only three
of each. We shall want more for killing snipers in the rigging and
repelling auxiliary craft.'

Holder: 'Aye, sir, where -- '
