Kickstarter Success!
The Not-Safe-Space 2 Kickstarter Campaign has ended successfully. Thanks to all who pledged!
Now we get to wait 2 weeks while Kickstarter transmits the funds, and Scott can order the books, and send surveys to backers to get current e-mail addresses for the .PDF versions and mailing addresses for the physical books.
All of this should show up in June.
The Transcript For This Page
Panel 1
Outside the habs again, in enviro-suits – Ernie is working at a machine about the size of a mini-fridge, which is anchored to the surface with spikes underneath. The thing has a 'mouth' on two sides; Ernie is shoving 25-cm cubes of various shades into one in back (he has a few dozen of them in a large net-bag anchored close-by). Out the top is coming a filmy sheet, sort of like plastic-wrap, which two of the boys and two of the girls are gently pulling away in opposing directions via handles extruded from the edges of the film. More Scouts can be seen close-by.
Caption: Afterward, Ernie took everyone back outside to put the final safety back-up – an air-skin – in place.
Caption: The air-skin was generated by a specialize fab informally called a 'spinner.'
Panel 2
We can now see several scouts, tethered to the guide lines, pulling the air-skin away from the fab in all directions.
Caption: A low-pressure inflated air-skin could be a life-saver if one of the habs suffered explosive decompression.
Caption: A partial atmosphere would buy them time to get into enviro-suits or the other hab or the ship.
Panel 3
Distance view of the air-skin, seen from about 500 meters away from Eight-Ball. The skin is forming into a dome about 100 meters across and (eventually) 50 meters tall, covering both the habs and the ship.
Caption: While it was feasible to completely englobe Eight-Ball, they didn't have enough air to fill such a volume.
Caption: So it was formed into a dome over the ship and the habs, sealed and filled with enough air to create a pressure of about 450 millibars.
